i spend a lot of time participating in many different preservation projects these days. one of the most prominent is a movement to save feature phone content like lost games and flashy 2000s CGI, paired with an account spanning multiple sites fittingly named Old Phone Preservation. aside from that, i pick up random projects from time to time, be it restoring game consoles and computers, or digitizing other kinds of media.

i’ve been fortunate enough to receive lots of cassette tapes, discs, and floppy disks from all sorts of different places. these have ranged from mid-2000s city photos to old university newspaper article drafts, decades-old parties, uncut radio recordings, and so much more. on the subpage below is where i’ll talk about what that has looked like for me.

i have found interest in digitizing analog videotapes using a strategy which bypasses nearly all of a VCR's internal noise reduction
and other video "enhancement" circuitry, allowing a level of control over the video signal previously unexplored.

this section talks about my experience dealing with analog videotapes and building a setup to use for the open-source vhs-decode project.
