music video

 what is it about?
in this project, i made a music video accompanying RJD2’s Ghostwriter, solely with Unity and some basic editing in Adobe Premiere. the overarching theme i hoped to tell was that of a figure that feels and acts disconnected from the faded world they live in, while their world-painting actions are timed to the beats and feelings of the song.

on a technical standpoint, the video was done almost entirely in Unity, with only a few basic transparency and color blending effects done in Adobe Premiere. nearly all of the movements of the camera, character, and the bike they sort of float around with were done using Unity’s timeline editor, with a few specific scenes utilizing Cinemachine for camera following. custom shaders, particle effects, and Unity timeline add-ons were used to make this project as close to the vision in my head as i could.

images - music video

the part of the music video where unusual color streaks start appearing - later the character creates these to saturate the city
an example of the city being colored, with the character and their newly-found bike visible in the distance while a blue and green trail follows
the end of the music video, timed to where the song’s pacing slows as it gets quieter and fades out.

images - first concepts

from the very beginning i wanted to closely tie the actions with the rhythm of the song, as well as this specific camera pedestal movement while the character walks (or in this case, hovers) down the stairs
the first incarnations of the bike shot, where the song’s pacing changes. it ended up looking a fair bit differently in the end, but i still think it did what i wanted it to do
my first ideas of what i wanted to happen when the character started floating around on the rainbow bike they came across. nothing here was final, but i do wonder how it would’ve looked to do the high-FOV thing i first thought of on the left pane
